Advocacy Alert: Support Ohio Film Tax Credit

The Ohio House version of the budget has included an increase for the Ohio Arts Council! Yay!

Unfortunately, it also eliminates the Ohio Motion Picture Tax Credit. Boo! Thankfully, the Senate just passed a bill to not only keep the existing credit at $40 million annually, but also expand it to include Broadway shows. Clearly, the Ohio House and Senate are not on the same page.

We need the Ohio legislature to support all of Ohio’s creative industries, which generate more than $41 billion in economic activity and support nearly 290,000 jobs in Ohio annually. Here is what you can do to help support efforts to retain the credit that is helping grow the impact of film in Cleveland’s economy:

  1. Call or write your representatives and senators to encourage them to retain the Ohio Motion Picture Tax Credit and support Senate Bill 37 (which now heads to the House). Get more info and messaging from the Greater Cleveland Film Commission.
  2. Attend the Save Ohio Film Jobs Media Mixer on Tuesday, May 14 at 6:00 p.m.
  3. Write a letter to the editor and tell them why we should be supporting all of Ohio’s creative industries, including the Ohio Arts Council and the Ohio film industry. Want a hint on where to start? Creative Industries are a growing part of the GDP according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis and National Endowment for the Arts. We need Ohio positioned to benefit from that growth.
